A Brief Bio
Born and raised in South Africa in a very British
tradition, as a young woman she left home for Europe.
After spending a chilling winter in London, it wasn't
long before the real adventures started, taking
her to exotic New Guinea. From then on it was non-stop
sailing and cruising through the South Pacific,
Central America and the Caribbean. By this time,
sailing and travel had become a way of life and
she pursued both with passion.
Southern California became home for many years,
where she raised her two sons, Ryan and Cody. She
also was lucky enough to become part of a start-up
magazine (Dockside) and then to get into the burgeoning
internet phenomenon in the mid-1990's.
This opened new doors - and new travel opportunities
in the sailing world. quokka sports was on the leading
edge of the internet world (just a little too advanced
for its time, unfortunately) and Susan covered and
reported on sailing events around the world, the
most famous being the Whitbread Round the World
Race. She sent reports in from South Africa and
Europe and then later covered the EDS Atlantic Challenge,
following the boats like a groupie, to Europe's
many stops, across the Atlantic to Boston and Baltimore
and back to St. Malo, France.
From there it was back to her roots in South Africa
for a two-year sojourn (one of many over the years)
where she worked as a travel and lifestyle writer/photographer
for Country Life Magazine. This was perhaps the
most exciting time for her. Susan became involved
with a couple of NGO's in Kwa-Zulu Natal that are
helping the African women who are infected or affected
with AIDS. She met amazing people and traveled to
places even most South Africans didn't go, gaining
a deep understanding of life for the indigenous
people.
Now Susan is back in the US with husband Chris,
living in the rather chilly Pacific Northwest and
dreaming of warmer climes. Ryan and Cody have both
inherited her creative genes; Ryan is a Senior Story
Producer in the television industry and Cody is
training as a furniture designer and maker (when
he isn't surfing.)
